Pro 7 Panel: Mitochondria

Dr. Sima Aidun, N.M.D.

Because all areas of genetic testing are interconnected with one another, a weakness or strength in any one area can positively or negatively affect other areas. This is why we take a holistic approach to genetic testing with the Pro 7 Panel, rather than testing just one area of concern.

Mitochondria

Mitochondria are often called the powerhouse of the cell – and for good reason!

Found in the cells of every complex organisms, mitochondria turn the sugars, fats and proteins we eat into forms of chemical energy that the body uses to carry on living.

Since they produce about 90% of the chemical energy cells need to survive, you can see just how important they are.  No energy; no life!

They also produce chemicals which break down waste products so they’re less harmful and recycle some of those waste products to save energy.

Mitochondria also play a special role in making cells die (apoptosis) which is vital for the process of growth and development. Sometimes cells don’t die when they should and grow uncontrollably. This is how a tumor starts.

Consequences of Unhealthy Mitochondria

Mitochondrial disease consequences are exhibited in many conditions especially the ones affecting brain and neurological systems such as depression, anxiety, ADD, ADHD, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson, autism etc., learning disabilities, unexplained liver, kidney ,heart failure, lack of endurance in physical activities to name a few.

How Healthy Are Your Mitochondria?

We are each born with a set genetic ability to make mitochondria. Some of us are genetically very efficient at this and others are not, with varying levels across humankind.

As we age, and maintain certain diet and lifestyle habits, the number and health of our existing mitochondria is affected.

“Mitochondria produce about 90% of the chemical energy cells need to survive.  You can see how important they are. No energy; no life!”
